NEW AGENCY TO SEPARATE PRODUCER AND CONSUMER INTEREST

New legislation that will radically redefine the way work on food safety is
handled in Britain has been published.
The draft bill to set up an independent agency to protect standards
throughout the food chain is now available for public consultation.
The draft legislation establishes a Food Standards Agency which will be
funded by a levy on food retailers and caterers as well as from the public
purse.

More money spent on a public service does not automatically mean better
performance, as shown by a new report from the Audit Commission.
The Commission’s 1997/98 Police and Fire Services Performance Indicators
identify the both police and fire services are receiving more money per
head of population than previously, yet this hasn’t necessarily brought
better results.
