PROBATION SERVICE SHAKE UP

Following extensive discussion on the consultation paper “Joining Forces to Protect the Public”, the probation service will be re-shaped to harmonise with the modernisation of the Criminal Justice system. The Service will be totally funded by central government and it will be headed by a Director directly accountable to the Home Secretary.

WHITEHALL SLOW TO JOIN UP

A consultation paper on housing issued by the Department for Environment Transport and the Regions makes no mention of proposals published by the Department of Social Security. This is despite the coverage of supported and sheltered housing in the DSS document Supporting People.
The Best Value initiative in local government recognises the importance of a joined up approach to addressing issues, but the DETR Best Value Housing Framework consultation paper is silent about cross cutting strategies.
