TENSION SOLUTION ON OFFER

The Local Government Association (LGA) has made a bid to work alongside the
Government to tackle one of the biggest tensions between the two.

The organisation that represents every council in the country has asked to
work with the new Performance and Innovation Unit to sort out what should
be regulated centrally, and what should be subject to local discretion.

PUBLIC SERVANTS URGED TO AID THE NET

The Office of Fair Trading and OFTEL are being asked to review their rules
so that the UK continues to lead the way in e-commerce.

Trade and Industry Secretary, Stephen Byers has set a deadline of March 2000
to achieve the review. He is worried that existing regulation, set up
before the development of e-commerce, may stunt its growth.
