Traces the ways in which learning has been viewed within psychological research. Believes that the concept of the learning organization is close to this area of research and could benefit from its insights. Identifies the key ideas from psychological research as being that individuals learn through exposure to experts in their environment; that learning occurs through negotiation of meaning; and that learning takes place through reflection and the strategic planning of further learning. Relates these to the principles that underpin the concept of the learning organization. Based on this analysis reviews the learning processes within an enterprise culture, universities, the workplace and consultancies, refering back to other articles published in the same issue of this journal.
