Independent research covering 8 New Deal for Lone Parent Pilots reveals that they were a qualified success. The evaluation covered the first year of operation from July 1997. The New Deal was rolled out nationally from October 1998.The aim of New Deal is to create a culture change among lone parents giving them the confidence to see employment as the best path out of poverty. This is based on research which shows that once they move into work they are likely to be working 5 years later.

A ten year strategy has been launched to move the UK away from the bottom of the European heart disease league. Some 110,000 people die each year from heart disease and many of the deaths are preventable. The aim is to cut deaths by 40% by 2010.The strategy, known as the National Standards Framework, covers prevention through primary care to emergency and specialist hospital care and rehabilitation. It sets standards for prevention diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. It also sets out what services should be available across the country.
