Sets out BPR methodologies in the literature under, initially, two groupings: management accounting (MA) and information systems development (IS). Discusses the main elements within each family, e.g. process focus, streamlining, and continuous improvement – MA, and business analysis, business modelling, dataflow, and strategic planning – IS. Adds a third dimension – organization theory-based methodologies (OT), which brings more of a people dimension to MA and IS approaches. Summarizes a dozen limitations seen in these existing methodologies and offers a new tool – agent reform morphism analysis (ARMA) – which contains elements of the previous groups e.g. efficiency and effectiveness. Declares ARMA gives a more holistic and improved approach to BPR through being built around systems thinking, formal mathematical notations for business rules, and establishment of supportive processes and structures.
