GOVERNMENT INVITES COMMUNICATION ON COMMUNICATIONS REFORM

The fast-changing pace of communications technology has encouraged the Government to seek the advice of top telecommunications and broadcasting experts to ensure new legislation is appropriate.The experts are to help stimulate discussion on regulation, public service broadcasting and other key issues to be considered in the Government’s White Paper on communications reform.

SELECT COMMITTEE CONCERNS DISMISSED

Concerns about the political neutering of Parliament’s select committee system have been virtually dismissed by the Government.Select committees provide the scrutiny role for government departments, particular programmes or legislation.

In March the liaison committee that manages the select committees registered its unhappiness with the political fixing of committee memberships by all parties.
