WHITEHALL APPOINTS WEBMASTER GENERAL

The Government has appointed its first Director of e-communications aimed at ensuring the Government itself has a first class internet presence. With companies being encouraged to get on the net and help make the UK one of the best places to do conduct e-business, the Government wants to set a leading example.Lucian Hudson, aged 40, will be based in the Cabinet Office and will report to the Prime Minister’s e-envoy. He will head the team responsible for developing new content for the UK online government portal and co-ordinating work across departments and agencies to improve quality of Government websites.

Asks if the concept of emotional intelligence can provide a useful way of assessing if an employee is ready for promotion to a senior management position. Uses Goleman’s analysis of emotional intelligence to assess the differences in emotional intelligence between senior and middle managers within a global manufacturing company. Reports finding statistically significant differences between the groups of managers in the areas of political awareness, leadership, change catalyst and team capabilities – the senior managers scoring significantly higher in these areas. Discusses the implications of this for management development programmes for middle managers, arguing that there is a strong case for putting emotional intelligence on the management development agenda. Comments: Gives very little detail of the research that backs up these conclusions.
