Assesses the progress of information management and technology strategy in the UK National Health Service (NHS) over a period of 10 years. Outlines a brief history of the application of maturity models to information systems and information technology in organizations, following this with a review of progress in information management and technology strategy in the NHS between 1992 and 1998. Next, examines the current focus, which is the data administration and maturity phases of the maturity model and which is based on the assumption that technical and organizational integration have been achieved. Considers, however, that the NHS has not reached a sufficient level of maturity in information systems, management and technology to move into the data administration and maturity phases and that integration must take place first. Also recommends that the NHS allows time for consolidation of this integration within the user community.
