A partnership between the public and private sector has delivered a project which is aimed to enhance the economic life of the North East of England.The regional development agency One NorthEast has launched a website aimed purely at attracting hi-tech investment, harnessing support from big local businesses such as Shell, Exxon and Mobil.

ATTITUDES TO PENSIONS

New research has revealed that there is a big public education programme to be conducted if the vast majority of those people for whom they are designed are to be persuaded to take up their own pension provision.A new report for the DSS examines public attitudes to planning for retirement and pensions, including stakeholder pensions. The report is based on analyses of interviews conducted in Britain with almost 1700 adults.

CHANGING COMPETENCIES OF PUBLIC MANAGERS

Contends that the core competencies of staff are value competencies and that these should be understood as commitments. Defines competence, briefly reviews the literature on competence areas and commitment in terms of public managers and then comments on the consequences of new public management for commitments in everyday public management, looking at ethical, political, professional and task commitment. Explains that the new commitment is based on utilities rather than on obligations, stating that this changes normative commitment to strategic commitment.
