Explains the impact that the decision made by Nortel (Northern Telecom) Fixed Wireless Access, UK, previously a Ministry of Defence site, to move from the Ministry’s quality standards to ISO 9000 meant for its auditing methodology. Describes how the audit group identified the need to move from a functional-based management system to a process-based system, indicating the alterations this made to Nortel’s organizational structure, and the role that the audit group played in defining this. Identifies the implications of the new structure for the audit methodologies, detailing the new system, and outlining how auditors worked with employees to improve processes. Notes areas that still need modification, but highlights that decision by the British Standards Institute to pilot the process-based audit methodology.
