A new initiative by the regional development agency (RDA) for the North East aims to make innovation a routine feature of business life. The North East Innovation Strategy and Action Plan 2001 provides a framework aimed at accelerating the creation, acquisition, and application of knowledge, skills and new technologies by businesses in the region.The goal is to embed the concept of innovation into the business plan of every North East company – encouraging them to prioritise the fast-tracking of innovative ideas through to product development.

PILOT SCHEMES REDUCE CANCER CARE WAIT

Waiting times for cancer treatment have been cut dramatically under pilot schemes to end delays in assessment and treatment.The Cancer Services Collaborative programme was launched in November 1999. Among the successes so far is the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, which swept away a three-week delay in breast cancer waiting times by re-designing patient registration forms to double-up as oncology referral forms.

Reviews the literature on corporate governance, condensing it into nine general principles of good organizational governance and then presents five benchmarks of excellence in corporate governance. Comments on proposals to have one chief executive officer reporting to two or three boards of directors in the Canadian health sector, insisting that it violates the basic governance principles of unity of command, unity of direction, unity of accountability and ownership needs. Urges organizations to follow the nine general principles of corporate governance when choosing an organizational model.
