WORK EXPERIENCE IN CIVIL SERVICE FOR ETHNIC MINORITIES

A programme has been launched offering ethnic minority undergraduates and graduates the chance to experience at first hand how government departments work. The sixty trainees selected for the programme will take up paid training placements this summer. The initiative is spearheading the drive to demonstrate to potential ethnic minority recruits that the Civil Service can offer an outstanding career option. It is seen as particularly important to dispel the perception that the Civil Service only offers rewarding careers for white, male, middle-class, middle-aged Sir Humphreys.Each trainee’s programme will be tailor made to develop skills and provide an insight into the work of a department. Residential training will add to these skills and provide an overview of working in government.

Employment Service and Tesco have formed a partnership to allow supermarket customers to look for a job while they fill up the trolley. Touch screen Jobpoints have been installed in two locations to test out user reaction for six months. Early findings from the trial will be used to shape future decisions about the provision of Jobpoints in third party sites.Jobpoints allow free access to every vacancy held by every Jobcentre in Britain. With around 400,000 job vacancies this is Europe’s largest national job bank. They can be used by anyone looking for work. Jobseekers wanting to be referred to a vacancy can print the details from the Jobpoint and either call the Employment Service Direct telephone service from the store or from home, or alternatively they can call in at their local Jobcentre.
