ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT CHECK ON PUBLIC SECTOR

Local authorities, central government departments and executive agencies are being encouraged to take part in a new project to investigate the environmental impact of the public sector in the UK.The project will be run by Waste Watch, the national organisation promoting waste reduction, reuse and recycling. The research which will be carried out by Ernst & Young and funded by Biffaward, anenvironment fund using landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services.

BMA CALLS FOR MODERN WORKING PRACTICES FOR JUNIOR DOCTORS

The British Medical Association’s Junior Doctors’ Committee is asking all the main political parties to commit themselves to effective family friendly policies for junior doctors.It has written to the health spokesmen of the three main parties as well as the Minister for Women outlining the difficulties faced by such workers.

By Norah Jones and Michael ConnollyWithin management generally, and within education management more specifically, there has been a continuous search for the key to effective management development. Generic occupational standards, generated by the Management Charter Initiative are claimed to be applicable and transferable to any manager in any organization. Thus, a manager in a school would be expected to meet the same requirements as a manager in any other organization at the same level. In the education world, both practitioners and theoreticians are skeptical about the competency approach. This article analyses the relevance of the management standards to primary headship by reporting on the experiences of six headteachers seeking NVQ management qualifications.
