An eight million pound research project is to look at how best to react to one of the successes of the NHS and other positive features of modern living – a much larger older population.It will pump money into three pioneering projects examining what works best to aid the active recovery and rehabilitation of older people, keeping them independent for longer.

Regulatory impact assessments (RIA) have helped contribute to better policy making and to reduced business costs, according to the National Audit Office (NAO).But, although the NAO says there are many examples of good practice in preparing RIAs across Whitehall, there is room for improvement.

LEARNING THROUGH PARTNERSHIP: PRIVATE FINANCE AND MANAGEMENT IN THE DELIVERY OF SERVICES FOR LONDON

By Jon Wakeford and Jo Valentine.This article looks at the attractiveness of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to the private sector. One of the authors works for Jarvis plc-the company has been a major participant in PFI projects and, more recently, in various PPPs in London and across the UK. The article aims to identify a realistic model of the role of the private sector in PPPs. The authors use three case studies from London to recommend ways of improving the partnership element of PPPs in order to reach a ‘win-win’ situation, rather than the traditional adversarial approach between private and public sectors.
