COUNCILS SHORTLISTED AS BEACONS

The scheme to spread good practice across local authorities has shortlisted more than sixty councils for beacon status. In all, 130 applications were received from 94 councils.The service areas focussed on in this, the third round of beacon awards, include excellence or innovation in provision of community legal services, ability to foster business growth, use of libraries as a community resource and tackling fuel poverty.

REGULATION-FREE SCHOOLS WILL RAISE STANDARDS

Further light has been shed by the Government on what it means when it says it wants to offer schools ‘greater autonomy’.The phrase appeared in the recent White Paper on education, which promised a raft of improvements, mainly aimed at secondary schools, and to build on what is seen as the success of measures to drive up children’s performance at primary school level.
