CONFERENCE WILL SHARE LESSONS OF NHS ACHIEVERS

There will be a major conference and exhibition next year to celebrate and spread good practice in the National Health Service and in social care. The move was announced by the Health Secretary, Dr John Reid as the winners of this year’s Health and Social Care Awards were named.Dr Reid said he had commissioned the event which will take place in twelve months time to coincide with NHS Week 2004. Dr Reid said the idea was to celebrate and spread good practice to serve as an inspiration and education for all staff in the health service.

NEW ONLINE FORUM WILL SHARE BEST PRACTICE IN HEALTH INFORMATICS

A new interactive online community has been developed for healthcare IT enthusiasts which will allow them to voice their opinions and keep up with the latest news. It has been developed by the NHS Information Authority as part of its commitment to support health informatics as a key profession throughout the NHS.The site is designed to have a positive benefit on clinical practice and patient care. The authority says www.informatics.nhs.uk is for anyone who has an active interest in health informatics, and will also serve as the National Electronic Library for Health newly revamped specialist library in health informatics.It will provide news and networking opportunities with users able to take part in polls and surveys on key informatics issues, and air their views by joining discussion on any item of news or a subject of choice. The site will also allow those who want to promote subjects or areas of activity do so by setting up their own special interest groups.

This report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development sets out a framework for measuring people management and development. The framework has been designed to suggest how companies should go about measuring their human capital and communicating the value of their people in their annual report and accounts. It is, however, equally valid for public sector and not for profit organizations. The OECD defines human capital as “the knowledge that individuals acquire during their life and use to produce goods services or ideas in market or non-market circumstances.” It is estimated that up to 75 per cent of the value of an organization is rooted in intangible assets, including people and their contribution.The CIPD’s framework is based on the provision of five categories of information: human capital strategy, learning and development, acquisition and retention, management and performance. It is designed to outline the contribution that an organisation’s people are expected to make in relation to the opportunities and challenges it faces, as well as HR’s role within that
