STUDY SHOWS GOOD DESIGN CAN HELP RETAIN NHS STAFF

Almost nine out of ten directors of nursing believe the design and functioning of hospital buildings has a significant impact on the performance of nursing staff. As a result of the research the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment is calling on the government to consider the importance of hospital design as a way improve staff performance and morale in the NHS.

CITY COUNCIL HEAD TO BE HOME OFFICE DIVERSITY CHAMPION

The Chief Executive of Wolverhampton City Council, Derrick Anderson, has been named as the Home Office Diversity Champion for race, gender and disability issues in a move, which it is claimed will boost plans to drive diversity forward in the Civil Service.

The authors sought their views and found that the challenge is to move beyond the traditional research agenda and to develop practical ideas for responding to their needs. What is needed is a change of mindset as much as developing specific services.

The aim of the resource pack is to help organisations promote and implement the use of an HR Leadership Qualities Framework that describes those behaviours which enhance NHS HR capacity and capability to improve the patient experience. The resource pack will provide a ‘thread’ through the myriad of leadership and competence based initiatives which address not only HR capacity but also the HR
capacity of line managers. It achieves this through an emphasis on the practical application of the framework and the competencies described within it highlighting their use in a range of HR and development processes. The pack includes: the case for an HR leadership qualities framework and the framework, recruitment, selection, learning and development, feedback, local HR initiatives
and accounting for people.

BOOST FOR SCRUTINY OF HEALTH SERVICES

Nine councils with innovative action learning projects in the field of health scrutiny will receive 20,000 pounds to further their work. The awards are being made by the Centre for Public Scrutiny as part of their three-year Health Scrutiny Support Programme, designed to increase capacity as non-executive
council members get to grips with their new powers to scrutinise health services.

POLICE SPENDING MORE TIME ON THE BEAT

Technology is helping to keep officers out of the police station. The new radio network, Airwave, is replacing a patchwork of bespoke outdated analogue radios with a state-of-the-art sophisticated communication system. The 2.9bn pounds government contract is due for completion in Spring 2005.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT – WHAT IS THE TEN YEAR VISION?

A debate on the future of local government has been launched by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister with a document setting out what are seen as the issues that will drive the vision. They are local leadership, citizen engagement and participation, service delivery, the performance framework, and the
relationship between central, regional and local government. During the coming months the government is hoping to build up a shared vision with active participation from local government and other stakeholders.

LONDON REPORT

This report by the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit reviews the strategic issues facing London, its role as the UK’s capital and as a world city, and the delivery of long-term central government priorities in the region. On the issue of public services the report finds that London’s public services exhibit both extremely good and very poor performance. A high proportion of Inner London boroughs are rated as excellent, but a similar number are rated as poorlyperforming.
