This programme is now available to view on egovtv.tv, the online television channel for public service modernisation. It reviews GovernmentConnect, the national programme sponsored by the ODPM, which will facilitate one of the biggest changes in the way that Local Authorities operate and deliver services to the citizen. It will enable them to connect securely with each other and with Central Government to facilitate a new level of integration of operations and secure online service delivery.The programme highlights the opportunities that GovernmentConnect will provide authorities for meeting eGovernment and Efficiency targets and looks at the roll-out for the programme. It describes what is being developed and how local authorities can realise the service benefits.

CALL FOR INTELLIGENT DEBATE ON REGULATION

The National Consumer Council is calling today for a more intelligent debate on red tape and for a more consumer-focused approach to judging which regulations work and which do not.The NCC has produced a pamphlet, “Consumers and Regulation”, which it says is designed to cut through what it calls ‘regu-waffle’ from vested business interests, which condemn all regulation as bad.

COMMISSION SETS OUT BENEFITS OF COUNCILS SHARING COSTS

Local authorities could save as much as 140 million pounds a year by sharing administrative costs according to a report published today by the Audit Commission. It identifies a number of ways in which councils could make such savings, which far outweigh the government-set efficiency target of 75 million pounds a year over three years.Today’s report, “The Efficiency Challenge”, looks at the potential to make savings in the administration costs of revenue and benefits services. It highlights ways in which some councils are already using a range of initiatives, including partnership working,to improve efficiency.
