This study into changing patterns in the British workforce was commissioned by Telewest Business and carried out by the Centre for Business Research at Manchester Business School. It reveals trends and their causes affecting career decisions in Britain.In recent decades, traditional family units have been turned on their heads by people choosing to relocate away from the areas they were born to other parts of the country in the course of their careers. At the start of 2006 it seems that the attitudes that drive these decisions are changing. The overriding conclusion of the report is that far from widening, the divide in employment patterns and attitudes, or at least the perceived divide, between the North and the South is actually narrowing.

POLICE FORCES TO REPORT TO HOUSEHOLDERS ON PERFORMANCE

People across England and Wales are to be given information on how well their local police force is performing. Summaries about policing are to be sent to every household in a move announced by the Home Office, which has issued guidance to police authorities and forces on what the documents should include.The guidelines say the summary reports must contain a statement of the police authority’s priorities for the year, an assessment of how well the police force met the previous year’s priorities and an assessment of how well the force has met any strategic policing priorities set by the Home Secretary.

LGA NAMES NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE

The Local Government Association has named its new chief executive. He is Paul Coen, currently the chief executive of Essex County Council. So far no date has been set for his move to the LGA , where he will replace Sir Brian Briscoe.The LGA said that Mr. Coen was appointed by a panel made up of its chairman, Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart, vice chair Sir Jeremy Beecham and other senior members. They had interviewed an exceptional field of candidates.
