COUNCILS’ GUM LITTER EDUCATION CAMPAIGNS GET UNDERWAY

The first local authority education campaign designed to reduce the litter problems caused by discarded chewing gum will begin tomorrow in Trafford. Two more schemes will be underway later this month and 15 councils will be involved in similar campaigns during the summer, using funding from the Chewing Gum Action Group.The Action Group is paying for an advertising campaign in each of the areas, using posters in the street, on buses and in bars using the slogan: ‘Thanks for binning your gum when you’re done.’ Alongside the posters the local authorities will run their own public relations initiatives to raise awareness of the problem of chewing gum litter; promote the responsible disposal of gum and educate people that those who drop gum on the floor can be fined up to 80 pounds.

CORPORATION CALLS ON COUNCILS TO PLAY PART IN PROVISION OF RURAL HOMES

The Housing Corporation is calling on local authorities to make the provision of affordable homes in rural communities a priority in their planning policies. The Corporation has announced it’s making 230 million pounds available to build six thousand new affordable homes in rural areas but it says more needs to be done and it cannot deal with the shortage of affordable housing on its own.The Corporation’s Chief Executive, Jon Rouse, said it had a long and positive history in rural housing and had funded the building of 26,000 homes in small villages across England. “It is increasingly recognised just how great the problem of lack of affordable rural housing is, particularly where people are unable to find an affordable home near where they work or close to their family and friends,” he said.
