By John Walsh The public sector has become a key area in combating climate change following the publication of environmental targets for official buildings by the end of the next decade and a commitment from the Prime Minister to transform Whitehall into “carbon neutral” within six years. These targets include reducing water consumption by 25 per cent and increasing energy efficiency per square metre by 30 per cent. In spite of significant increases in public spending on early education, the UK still lags behind its European counterparts in providing universal access to childcare. The latest issue of “Children in Europe, Managing the Mix: public and private sectors” says that in Britain the private sector is left to fill the childcare gap.

CALL FOR DOCTORS TO LEAD DEBATE ON HOSPITAL CLOSURES

 

Doctors must debate the issue of hospital closures and GPs should reassert themselves as advocates for patients, according to an article in today’s BMJ by Oxfordshire GP Richard Lehman. He says the issue has suddenly become headline news but it has never been the subject of a full national debate in the profession.
