The first university qualification for councillors in Britain has been launched by the University of Sunderland, in collaboration with the National Association of Councillors. The one-year Certificate for Elected Councillors has been designed to equip elected members to meet the current demands of local government.

A consortium of building and planning stakeholders is calling today for a major revaluation of the planning profession. A new report, “Future Planners: Propositions for the next age of planning”, recommends greater democratic accountability over planning priorities.

CLOSING THE CARE GAP

This paper from Counsel and Care, a national charity which seeks to get the best care and support for older people, identifies a care gap between the rising number of older people needing care services and the falling number actually receiving care either in their own home or in a care home.The paper highlights the top issues currently raised by older people, their families and carers, including getting a proper care needs assessment, accessing benefits and welfare rights and finding sheltered and extra care housing.
