A recruitment drive begins today to find more than 500 new trainee probation officers for England and Wales. Advertisements will appear this week in national newspapers looking for applications to enter a two-year training programme.

CHARITY CLAIMS IGNORANCE IN NHS LED TO DEATHS OF DISABLED PEOPLE

 

The leading mental health charity, Mencap, is calling today for an independent inquiry into the deaths of six people with a learning disability, which it claims are the result of widespread ignorance and indifference within the health service. The charity also wants improvements in the way complaints against the NHS are investigated.

LOCAL AREA AGREEMENTS – EVALUATION

This evaluation report from Communities and Local Government assess the early impact of local area agreements. It is based on research in pilot local authorities.The main benefits attributed to LAAs are better ways of joint working across agencies with improvements in local partnership commitment and energy, acceleration of integration of services particularly children’s trusts, social and health care as well as improved co-operation between councils and police. Although there is no evidence of efficiency savings there is a recognition that joined up working was leading not only to improved outcomes and performance, but the beginnings of savings through the merging and simplification of financial administration of funding streams.
