LYONS REVIEW TO SET COURSE FOR NEW SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE

 

The final report of Sir Michael Lyons’s inquiry into the future role, function and funding of local government will be published today with council leaders claiming it is the best opportunity in years for an urgent overhaul of the way local services are funded. At the publication of “Place-shaping: a shared ambition for the future of local government” , Sir Michael will unveil his final recommendations and highlight the important part local government can play in creating a new system of governance.

SERVICES FOR FAMILIES AT RISK OF EXCLUSION TO BE REVIEWED

 

More than 140,000 families are at risk of social exclusion and need more tailored support packages at critical moments, according to new Government figures that show they suffer five or more indicators of social exclusion. There will now be a review of the way various services deal with vulnerable families, which will include consultations with local authorities and the voluntary sector.

PATHWAYS TO PREVENTION PROJECT

This report from Mission Australia and Griffith University describes the first five years of a project designed to support children in Australia during their formative years. The report describes the project against the background of growing developmental problems in childhood which lead to the growth of social problems like educational failure, poor mental health, substance abuse, crime, antisocial behaviour, alienation and unemployment.The Pathways to Prevention project is an innovative program of community action. The report describes the methods and results and shows that it takes a scientifically sound but common-sense approach to promoting children’s well-being by combining support for families with focused enrichment activities for children, underpinned by the careful collection of evaluative data.
