HOUSE BUILDING DRIVE COULD BE BOOSTED BY DECENTRALISING INFRASTRUCTURE SAYS BRIEFING

 

Government plans to see more new homes being built would be more likely to be achieved if energy, water and sewerage systems were decentralised, according to a paper from the think-tank the Local Government Information Unit. It also calls for the investigation of smaller infrastructure systems.

COMMISSION WANTS EVIDENCE IN BID TO BROADEN POOL OF POTENTIAL COUNCILLORS

 

Serving councillors and former members of local authorities are being asked to give evidence to a new Commission set up to look at the barriers to a wider range of people standing for election and what incentives might help overcome them. Members of the public are also being asked for their help in a wide-ranging call for views that will help to produce a series of recommendations later this year.

BUILDING ON PROGRESS: SECURITY CRIME AND JUSTICE

This strategy document from the Home Office sets out proposals for confronting crime and criminals during the next ten years. It looks at how new technology, powers, service structures and ways of fighting offending will keep pace with an ever changing society. It aims to ensure victims and communities feel more secure while justice is effectively and efficiently done and seen to be done. New community punishments are also proposed with communities able to have their say on how offenders should contribute to society.It also announces a review of the Police service which will look at ways to address the issues of reducing bureaucracy and promoting better business processes, progressing neighbourhood policing, ensuring the public drive local policing priorities and effective management of resources.
