VOLUNTARY SECTOR BACKS COMMUNITIES BILL

 

Voluntary organisations are backing the Sustainable Communities Bill, which aims to reform local government by empowering local people to make their own decisions and to drive policies on sustainable communities. The private member’s bill would place a duty on central government to produce a ‘community action plan’ to promote sustainable communities.

DIRECTORS RAISE ISSUE OF HUMAN RIGHTS OF ELDERLY PEOPLE IN CARE

 

Social services directors have called for more attention to be paid to the human rights of older people in health and social care settings. In a submission to the House of Commons’ Joint Committee on Human Rights, the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services has warned that older people may lack confidence in raising concerns about possible abuse, neglect or discrimination.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE BUSINESS SUPPORT

The Office of the Third Sector, Cabinet Office, has invited Regional Development Agencies to submit proposals for using additional funding to boost Business Link capacity to broker support for social enterprises. The aim is to help social enterprises to maximise their performance and impact. Evidence shows that businesses that use business support and advice improve their performance and so social enterprises are being encouraged to use the support that is available. There is a focus on Business Link because it provides a gateway to organisations that can support social enterprises.The RDAs will work with stakeholders, including specialist support agencies, to use the money to meet the support needs of social enterprises in their region. The Office of the Third Sector will work with RDAs to develop baseline measures and evaluate impact over the lifetime of this intervention.
