FIRE SERVICE LEADS WAY IN REACHING DEAF COMMUNITY

West Midlands Fire Service has become the first in the country to include sign language versions of vital safety messages on its website. The site has been revamped to include video clips of television presenter Nikki Stratton using British Sign Language to put across messages to members of the deaf community for whom BSL is their first language.

COUNCILLORS URGED TO BE PROMOTERS OF GOOD DESIGN NOT JUST REGULATORS

The government’s advisors on architecture have published new guidelines for planning decision makers in local government in an attempt to ensure that new housing developments are successful. “Actions for housing growth: Creating a legacy of great places” has been produced by CABE – the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment – and recommends 10 practical actions.

Around two fifths of organizations in the public and private sectors say that their line managers are not very effective in supporting learning and development according to a new survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. This contrast with the 74% of respondents who said that their line managers have taken on greater responsibility for learning and development activities during the past two years, and overwhelming agreement that line managers are critical to supporting learning and development.A lack of training for line managers, competing pressures and a need to align learning and development objectives with the wider organisationalstrategy are all reasons cited for this gap between theory and practice.
