WELSH COUNCLS TOLD OF NEED FOR CHANGE IN CULTURE

 

Local authorities in Wales have been told they have a central role to play in delivering improved public services – but that this would require a change in their culture. The Welsh assembly’s new Minister for Social Justice and Public Service Delivery, Andrew Davies told Councillors that the top priority for the public sector was to deliver better services and he stressed the part they could play in making this happen.

A call is being made for local people to be given the means to shape and improve their bus services by giving elected councillors new powers. It comes in a pamphlet published by the think-tank the New Local Government Network.

Children After Custody

By Frances Crook Some 6500 children pass through various forms of custody each year and half of them require support. Their disadvantages range from mental health problems, drug use, violence at home and sexual abuse. Although legislation requires that support plans be in place before release, frequently the requirement is not met. The author presents the disturbing picture as it is seen by the Howard League for Penal Reform.
