HISTORIC DOCUMENTS ON SHORTLIST FOR NEW LIFE ON LINE

 

Two local authorities – Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and the City of London – have each had two historic manuscripts shortlisted in a competition that will see them given new life by being made available online. The competition is being run by the British Library, in collaboration with the Society of Chief Librarians and Microsoft, to make valuable and fragile texts available digitally.

SOUTHAMPTON SIGNS PARTNERSHIP WITH CAPITA

 

Southampton City Council has signed a deal with Capita, which the authority says will bring increased investment and help to modernise its key services. Hundreds of council staff will switch to working for the company and local people are likely to see changes quickly with an immediate revamp planned for Gateway, the council’s one stop shop for enquiries.

The City Councils says the ten-year partnership agreement is part of its overall vision to modernise and invest in its services. Under the contract, Capita will bring 25 million pounds to the city in the first three years, which will be used to update IT systems as well as to pay for improvements to Gateway.

FACTORS INFLUENCING SOCIAL MOBILITY

This report by the Policy Research Institute was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions. With increasing inequality, social mobility has emerged as a measure of social fairness. Several studies suggest that social mobility may have declined in the UK and this has strengthened strategic and political concern with the issue. The study found that in terms of informing the development of policy responses, it is helpful to think of social mobility as the quality of participation in the labour market.The factors involved in social mobility include social and cultural capital which can help middle-class families confer social advantages on their children, increasing their potential to move upwards and protecting them from downwards movement in the social hierarchy.
