COUNCILS GET TOUGH WITH FLY TIPPERS

Councils are getting tougher on people who dump rubbish illegally but they are warning that everyone who lives and works in an area has to play a part in cracking down on the fly tippers. New figures show local authorities have dramatically increased the number of enforcement actions against unlawful tipping.
The figures from the Flycapture database are based on at least 10 monthly returns in the past year from 345 authorities, that’s 97 per cent of all councils. 

SPENDING REVIEW IS ‘WORST COUNCIL SETTLEMENT FOR A DECADE’

Local authorities say Chancellor Alistair Darling’s announcement of an extra 2.6 billion pounds in central government grants to English local authorities over the next three years represents the worst settlement councils have received in the last ten years. The Comprehensive Spending Review foreshadowed a rise in the central grant to almost 26 billion pounds in 2010-11 - a real terms increase of one per cent a year.
