GULF BETWEEN PUBLIC EXPECTATIONS OF INFORMATION ASSURANCE AND PUBLIC SERVICE CULTURE

The public have high expectations that public bodies will safeguard their information, but a survey by Clearswift and Information Assurance has shown that this expectation is not embedded in the culture of public services.
The key finding from the research was that information assurance is fairly low down on the agenda of public service decision makers.

CHARITY PROMOTES HEALTHY EATING FOR HOSPITAL STAFF

The 30,000 hospital staff of NHS trusts based throughout the Cheshire and Merseyside region will soon be offered healthy eating options. The project will be delivered by Heart of Mersey, the cardiovascular disease prevention charity based in Liverpool.
The project resulted from research by Heart of Mersey which revealed poor levels of understanding among hospital staff around the term ‘healthy eating option’. 

ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

This report from the Housing Corporation and Communities and Local Government presents the views of registered social landlord and local authority tenants on anti-social behaviour.
The top issues experienced by tenants were rubbish or litter lying around, which were the concern of 60 per cent of tenants, teenagers hanging around on the street 54 per cent, and vandalism, graffiti & other deliberate damage to property or vehicles 40 per cent. 

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE FAILING TO FULFIL EXPECTATIONS

Predictions of the growth of social enterprise and its expanding role in taking on the delivery of more public services have not been realised. The Office of the Third Sector, which is part of the Cabinet Office, commissioned research to find out why growth had stalled and why new people had not been attracted to the sector. The research concluded that there is very little awareness of the sector and high levels of confusion about the difference between a charity and a social enterprise. 

PARKING METERS TO GO FROM THE STREETS OF WESTMINSTER

After almost half a century of service, coin-operated parking meters are being removed by Westminster City Council and they will finally disappear early next year. Pay by Phone parking was first introduced two years ago and it currently handles almost 100,000 transactions per week.
Motorists can now pay for their parking via a mobile phone call or text when using any of the council’s 8,500 parking bays across central London. 

ROAD PRICING SCHEMES

The Freight Transport Association has published a guide to the eleven potential road pricing schemes which have been promoted by the Department for Transport. Some schemes are intended to be developed by local authorities for specific areas, and may be a pre-cursor to the creation of a national road pricing scheme in the longer term.
The Association has identified a number of essential conditions that must be fulfilled in order for any scheme to gain its support. 

PARTNERSHIP AIMS TO PERSUADE COUNCILS TO PROMOTE CYCLING

A new partnership has been established to persuade local councils of the importance of cycling. Cycling England has launched the partnership with the think-tank the Local Government Information Unit with the aim of increasing the numbers of people cycling in areas across the whole of England with the exception of London. 

SOCIAL SERVICES CHIEFS CALL FOR MORE INVESTMENT IN DEMENTIA CARE

Dementia should not be seen as a life sentence according to Directors of Adult Social Services in their response to a Government consultation on transforming the quality of dementia care. In a joint submission with the Local Government Association they say delivering better care will need significant investment.
The joint response says it is vitally important to ensure, when raising awareness of dementia, that early symptoms are not downplayed or dismissed as part of the natural ageing process.
