REGULATORY MAP SHOWS COMPLEXITY OF LOCAL SERVICES

The first ever map of the UK’s local regulatory regime has revealed the enormous complexity surrounding the delivery of vital consumer protection and advice to business. The report from the Local Better Regulation Office shows that in some cases inspections alone can be carried out by up to three different local authorities – and it points to a need to simplify the system.

FATHER’S PETITION LEADS TO DEBATE ON KNIFE CRIME

Members of the Scottish Parliament are to debate knife crime in direct response to a petition from the father of a boy stabbed to death last year. The debate will be hosted by the Scottish Parliament’s Public Petitions Committee in mid-January and will aim to expand the debate on knife crime and provide a forum for a range of views from people and groups across Scotland.

The report presents ‘time’ as the new currency that knits communities together, promotes well-being and reduces financial pressures on public services. It argues that ‘timebanking’ is a practical tool for bringing people together to share their skills and for enabling people to be involved in shaping and producing public services. Based on principles of co-production it could revitalise schools, hospitals, public housing and even the youth justice system.
