POVERTY AND SOCIAL EXCLUSION: PROGRESS STALLED

The latest figures from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation show that progress in reducing poverty and social exclusion made from 1997 to 2003 has now stalled. Although some of the 56 indicators show an improvement, the great majority do not.

MAPPING PUBLIC SERVICE FUNDED INITIATIVES: TACKLING WORKLESSNESS IN DEPRIVED AREAS

This report sponsored by of the Government Office Network provides a brief ‘snapshot’ of initiatives that are targeted at tackling worklessness and improving delivery to vulnerable groups in deprived areas.

The report is based on information provided by local authorities and other partners and it distils out their learning experience. It includes projects, programmes and joint working practices which are directly aimed at reducing worklessness with both families and individuals. There are descriptions of how barriers to employment are being tackled by providing training, improving skills and reducing anti-social behaviour. It also includes a range of services relating to health and childcare provision, alongside interventions to improve employment opportunities.
