COUNCIL TAX RISES REVISED AS RECESSION BITES

Town halls are revising down this year’s council tax rises to help hard-pressed residents. In January the Local Government Association estimated a 3.5 per cent rise, but it has now revised the figure to 3.0 per cent. This is the lowest rise in over a decade.

CAMPAIGN TO CUT USE OF ANTIBIOTICS

The Department of Health has launched a ‘no prescription pad’ campaign to cut the use of antibiotics which don’t work on colds, most coughs or sore throats.

The campaign will run through March and April and adverts will be appearing in newspapers and magazines. Leaflets and posters will also be displayed in GP practices and pharmacies throughout the country.

Disabled parents and their children often receive fragmented and inadequate support, says a new study by the Commission for Social Care Inspection. Fragmentation has developed following the restructuring of services within councils where separate adults’ and children’s services have been created. This has led to competition about ‘who owns the family’.

DIALLING 999 FOR NON URGENT CALLS BURDENS SYSTEM

Almost two thirds of adults are mis-using emergency help services by dialling 999 in non-urgent situations, according to research commissioned by ntl:Telewest Business. The study revealed that confusion is rife over situations that warrant 999 calls, with a quarter of adults admitting they would dial emergency services to report graffiti, vandalism and other deliberate damage to property and almost a fifth insisting they would call about a stolen bike.

Scrutiny provides an opportunity for elected members to engage with a complex topic, assess what is happening locally, and identify opportunities for improvement. Scrutiny panels or committees can review issues from several different viewpoints.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT GIVES SUPPORT TO APPRENTICESHIPS

An online community website for sharing information has been launched by the Improvement and Development Association to support local authorities in developing apprenticeships for 16 to 24-year-olds. Users can log on to the Community of Practice, order a media pack and gain access to ‘apprenticeship tracker’ and ‘apprentice’s pen portrait gallery’.
