BRITAIN URGED TO LEARN EUROPEAN LESSONS TO FIX ‘BROKEN’ CARE SYSTEM

The British Government should look to Europe to find the best way to use personal budgets to fix the ‘broken social care system’, according to the leading older people’s charity Help the Aged. It says Britain is in a good position to take the best idea from countries which have already reformed their care systems.

MINISTERS AND COUNCILS WILL WORK TOGETHER TO HELP JOBLESS

Government ministers are to work closely with local government leaders to consider recommendations from a report looking at how to support councils in boosting employment. A national forum is being set up to bring together local authorities, Whitehall departments and other organisations.

LINKAGE PLUS: BENEFITS FOR OLDER PEOPLE

Currently there are 20 million people in the UK aged over 50 and the over-60s now out-number those under 16. This growth in the number of older people has coincided with support being increasingly directed towards the most needy. Assistance that supports the continued wellbeing and independence of the wider older population has steadily declined. This document from the Department for Work and Pensions describes how the LinkAge Plus pilot programme is seeking to adddress the problem.
