Social Networking Sites have become a global phenomenon, with communities such as MySpace, Facebook and Bebo reporting user figures in the hundreds of millions. In the last year some councils and other public bodies have moved into the social media, but the trend has now taken a sharp upward turn with the launch of Tweety Hall. The new service connects the public with local politics through Twitter, blogging and other social media.
Despite the Government’s commitment to make increasing use of the third sector in delivering public services, progress has been slow. A new agreement between the Department of Health and specialist third sector organisations is set to increase the flow of contracts for health and social care services.

Participatory budgeting now operates in 34 areas of the country and the aim is for it to be used by every local authority by 2012. It enables local people to make decisions on spending priorities that affect their lives right across the board, from local environmental issues and community facilities through to road safety measures and local crime initiatives.
