PUBLIC PROCUREMENT TO HELP BUILD SKILLS BASE

Public bodies across the UK are being urged to use the purchasing power of procurement contracts to drive critical investment in skills. Until recently the inclusion of clauses in contracts relating to skills and training was limited, but now it is to be applied across the board. Total public procurement is worth around 175 billion pounds a year.

PAN-EUROPEAN SPEED CHECK LAUNCHED

Traffic police across all EU Member States are taking part in a pan-European police enforcement campaign to target speeding drivers. The campaign, which will last one week, is being coordinated by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL). It’s designed to reinforce the message across the roads of Europe that speed kills.

RESEARCH SHOWS DEPTH OF RELIANCE ON CAR USE

A picture of Britain as a car reliant nation is painted today in new research which shows 80 per cent of people in households where car use is the norm. The biggest recent growth in car ownership has been amongst the poor and older people. The findings come in ‘The Car in British Society’, published today by the Royal Automobile Club Foundation.

TIME TO REBUILD CONFIDENCE OVER USE OF SURVEILLANCE POWERS SAYS LGA

The Local Government Association says it will work with councils to ensure that surveillance powers are used properly. The LGA said that all public bodies needed to re-build public confidence by showing that the powers were used to help bring serious criminals to justice and not for trivial reasons.

This report of the 2009 survey of local authority websites by the Society of IT Management reveals that 73 per cent of adults in the UK now have access to the internet, compared to 66 per cent last year. In some regions access is as high as 81 per cent.

CUSTODY PANEL PILOT CUTS NUMBER OF CHILDREN SENT TO PRISON

A joint initiative between the Howard League for Penal Reform and the Local Government Association has seen a striking drop in the number of children being sentenced to custody. The partners say the pilot in North Hampshire shows how improvements in the services provided for individual children means they can be supported safely in the community.

COUNCILS GET NEW GUIDANCE ON DEALING WITH DANGEROUS DOGS

Local authorities and police forces are to be given new guidance to help them to use laws to control dangerous dogs more effectively and to crack down on irresponsible dog owners. The guidelines have been produced by the Department for Environment in association with the police, the RSPCA and councils after ministers decided changes to the exisiting laws were not needed.
