GUIDES AIM TO EASE ANXIETIES FOR NEW COUNCILLORS

Councillors elected for the first time in yesterday’s polls are being offered a series of guides to help them do the job. They have been produced by the Local Government Information Unit, which says the current debacle over MPs’ expenses has increased councillors’ anxieties about how to work properly within the rules.

SPENDING WATCHDOG CUTS ITS OWN COSTS

The Audit Commission has detailed a series of measures to keep down its costs. They include job cuts, reduced staff expenses and the scrapping of bonuses for directors in a move which the Commission says is in keeping with ‘the national mood of seeking best value for the public purse’.
