With more job cuts in prospect across the public and private sectors, attention is being focused on ‘who to let go’. This new focus is having its effect on managers and staff alike. Monitoring workplace activity has revealed some interesting changes in behaviour, but the statistics come with a health warning.

Time and money are two key constraints on what people can achieve. The income constraint is widely recognised by policy-makers, but solutions risk freeing lone parents from income poverty only at the price of deepening their existing time poverty. The author highlights the importance of considering parental time, alongside household income, in pursuing a child poverty strategy.
New figures show that nine out of ten schools now meet the minimum the standard of achievement. The number of schools failing the standard has gone down from 440 last year to 270 this year, a reduction of 40 per cent. The minimum standard requires that at least 30 per cent of pupils gain 5A*-C grades at GCSE including maths and English.
Stereotypes of today’s youth as,’ violent’ ‘disrespectful’ or ‘apathetic’ have been challenged by a survey of 16-25 year olds which revealed a very different picture. The survey was carried out by the National Young Volunteers Service, a charity which aims to inspire a new generation of volunteers.

An independent report has recommended that public libraries and museums should work in partnership with Further Education colleges to pursue its recommendations for lifelong learning. The proposal has been welcomed by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and work has started on developing the public library-college model.

The satisfaction of tenants in social housing is rising steadily and the majority are no longer attracted by home ownership. The latest survey from the Tenant Services Authority Housing, the social housing watchdog, reveals that housing association tenants are more satisfied with the quality of their homes, their neighbourhoods and their landlords than ten years ago.
