DOCTORS WANT PLANNING PROCESS TO INCLUDE IMPACT ON LOCAL HEALTH SERVICES

Family doctors’ leaders are calling on the Scottish Government to take action to support the development of new GP practices in growing communities. The call has come from the BMA and the Royal College of General Practitioners at the beginning first National General Practice Week in Scotland.

Politicians of all parties are being urged to recognise that they cannot deliver support for older and disabled people without the work of an army of unpaid people. The Princess Royal Trust for Carers has estimated that 6 million people across the UK look after family members who are sick, living with a disability or who have mental health and substance abuse problems.

DELIVERING MORE WITH LESS: THE PEOPLE MANAGEMENT CHALLENGE

A people management crisis threatens public service delivery, according to a report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

The report highlights the sporadic and often inadequate quality of front line management in the public sector resulting in high levels of absence and an inability to tackle poor performance. Compared with the private sector, on average, public sector employers are three times less likely to discipline staff and rate their line managers’ conflict management skills more poorly.
