COUNCILS TOLD TO ACT NOW ON COSTS TO MINIMISE DAMAGE FROM CUTS

Councils are being urged to think bigger and to act more quickly to reduce costs so they can prevent funding cuts causing more damage than necessary to services and jobs. The stark warning comes today from the Audit Commission in a report which traces the effects of the economic downturn on local authority services.

MPs WANT DECENT HOMES STANDARDS FOR PRIVATE RENTED SECTOR

A report by MPs today praises the impact of the Decent Homes Programme on the living conditions of most social housing tenants but says the Government has failed to invest in a parallel programme for tenants in the private sector. The report from the Communities and Local Government Select Committee says there should be targets to bring all homes up to a decent standard.
