CLG COMMITTEE TO SCRUTINISE LOCALISM PLANS

Parliament’s Communities and Local Government Committee has announced an inquiry into the Government’s plans for localism and decentralisation of public services.

The committee issued a public call for submissions, to arrive by October 1, on a range of issues related to localism, with a specific request for evidence of how learning from the Total Place initiative could help develop the new agenda.

CHARITY ON TRACK TO SECURE WORK PROGRAMME CONTRACTS

Employment charity Shaw Trust is the preferred bidder for 16 of 28 government contracts to provide employment support to disabled people.

If confirmed, the contracts mean the charity would more than treble the number of people it supports, from around 3000 to over 9000.

COUNCIL CLAIMS CORRECTED BY £54.5 MILLION

The Audit Commission says it found £54.5 million of errors in claims for grants and subsidies made by councils in 2008/9. However, most claims by local authorities were completed correctly.

In a report issued today, the Commission says that councils claimed £45.6 billion pounds for funds including council tax and housing benefit, Sure Start money, and funding for major projects in local transport plans.

COUNCILS, BUSINESS AND THINK TANKS DISCUSS FUTURE FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Business groups, think tanks and councils have been meeting the government to discuss the development of new local enterprise partnerships (LEPs).

A round table event with Mark Prisk, Minister for regional and local economic development and decentralisation minister Greg Clark aimed to get a range of views on the creation of local enterprise partnerships.

DECENTRALISATION ACTIONS SET OUT

Britain’s Minister for Decentralisation has set out three actions he says are key to building the ‘Big Society’.

Speaking to the Policy Exchange, Greg Clark described the UK as one of the most centralised countries in the democratic world, and said it disempowered public sector professions and pushed voluntary organisations out of providing public services.

SOCIAL SERVICES GROUP PREPARES FOR POLICY CHALLENGES

The body which represents adult social services directors has announced major changes to better align with the Coalition Government’s policy agenda.

The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) has created six new programme boards, as a response to the the publication of the Government’s White Paper on the NHS and what they describe as “the prospect of further major policy announcements” in the coming months.
