With more shoppers deserting the high street, plans been announced to bring them back.

Shopping habits are changing and compared to last year, high street footfall is down 2 per cent. Following the Mary Portas 2011 report the problem of empty shops is to be tackled by relaxing planning controls. Some 11 percent of shops on the high street are empty, creating a depressing appearance and a financial loss for landlords. The new planning arrangements seek to turn this problem into an opportunity.

PARENTS FACE DAYCARE SHORTAGE AND HIGHER COSTS AS SCHOOL HOLIDAY APROACHES

Two-thirds of local authorities in England are failing to ensure there is sufficient childcare available in their area this summer. The cost of daycare has increased substantially in some areas.

The Daycare Trust’s 2012 holiday childcare costs survey, sponsored by Computershare Voucher Services, found that only one in three councils are fulfilling their legal duty to ensure that sufficient daycare is available. The survey also showed that over half of councils had cut their daycare budget.

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is a valued source of money for large regeneration and small business development schemes alike. It has supported many modest projects to boost enterprise or support small businesses as well a major schemes including the Eden Project in Cornwall, the Kings Dock redevelopment in Liverpool and the Sage concert hall and Baltic art gallery in Gateshead.

MORE POWER FOR OFSTED TO INSPECT CHILDRENS’ SERVICES
