Explores the meaning of managerialism, its reason for being and the challenges and threats to be confronted before its promise of sustained improvement in public agency performance can be realized. Considers the view of managerialism as a private sector solution to public sector problems, and its role in fostering good public administration and management. Assesses the part which managerialism can play in public sector reform, taking into consideration the requirement for structural and cultural change within public agencies.
