Quotes business leaders and academics who believe that women’s management and leadership skills are such that they will soon catch up and overtake men in the Western business world. Identifies the skills and qualities that are singled out by the commentators as fitting women for management in the 21st century. Contrasts this with statistics from the UK, gathered by Cranfield School of Management, that indicate that the number of women reaching top positions within firms is declining. Summarizes the reasons for this identified in the Cranfield report (the informal organizational culture perpetuating the idea of male and female roles; women being perceived as lacking commitment; and human resource practices, such as performance appraisal that fail to measure soft skills). Points to evidence that women possess better transformational leadership skills than men and argues that organizations will suffer if they do not recognize these skills.
