Practitioners have expressed scepticism about the likelihood of engaging the public in neighbourhood renewal. They feel that the topic is seen as dull and that, in general, the public is not interested. About half of the local strategic partnerships in the 88 most deprived areas in England had no communications strategy for their neighbourhood renewal work up to March this year. Advice offered to make communication more effective includes: only consult when there is a decision to take; take account of the diverse nature of the local community and make sure the findings are used in the decision making process. Examples are given of successful consultations in Sheffield, Bolton and Manchester.Published by the Audit Commission. http://www.audit-commission.gov.uk
