This programme is now available to view on egovtv.tv, the online television channel for public service modernisation. Margaret Eaton, Local Government Association Chair, describes the challenges facing local government as the UK goes through recession and how councils are responding.

There is a double pressure on councils with greater demands on services, particularly from people who have lost their jobs and at the same time low interest rates result in reduced income from investments.

To meet this challenge councils are innovating in many areas, particularly in back office services. Councils are joining together to share services such as payroll and council tax collection.

GovTV is a dedicated web-cast television channel for governors of public bodies, council members and senior executives across all public sector organisations and is available free to an unlimited audience at anytime, at any location via the internet.
