Effective visualisation of data can help in the exploration and understanding of data, as well as in communicating that understanding to others. Data visualisation is particularly useful in the analysis process because it helps in the exploration of datasets to identify patterns, associations and trends. Good visualisation can be seen as a central tool in carrying out analysis.

This paper summarises the project and the outputs, most of which are on the website http://www.improving-visualisation.org . The site, which supports public sector researchers, provides good practice examples and case studies, practical and step-by-step guides on how to visualise data, and links to more detailed resources. The studies give examples of the different types of data visualisation in local strategies and plans relating to Sustainable Community Strategies, Local Area Agreements and Joint Strategic Needs Assessments.
