The social media is becoming increasingly important to the lives of many people and it is particularly effective in getting messages across to people with an interest in common. A growing number of members of local councils are joining this movement with blogs or by the use of sites such as Facebook.

This article by a seasoned ‘blogger’ Councillor Mary Reid offers the benefit of her experience. She provides top tips on how councillors can make the most of blogs and social network media.

She suggests that while it is tempting to do nothing but a campaign on a blog, it is preferable to use the space more widely. For example, to praise work done by the voluntary sector and council officers. It can also be used to describe celebrations that have been attended or even just an AGM. Displaying photos of the key people and describing what good things they are doing is an effective way of cementing relations. This amplifies the praise and neatly grows the audience.
